A proud mommy moment

Eddy, Quinn, and I were in Babies-R-Us this past Saturday just looking around to see if they had this specific co-sleeper I am interested in. They didn't but that really isn't important here. Eddy runs to use the restroom and Quinn and I are just browsing and I notice this other mother with her little daughter and grandma also in tow and they kept looking over at us. At first I couldn't figure it out but then I realized that Quinn had been singing the entire time; the same tune over and over. I had been hearing it all day so it kind of had become background noise to me. The grandma then comes over to us and asks if he is singing an Edvard Grieg tune. I told her that it was actually an Antonin Dvorak tune, the main melody from New World Symphony No. 9. She was just shocked and yells over to her daughter that he was singing Dvorak. She was absolutely beside herself with disbelief. She goes on telling the daughter how he is singing it with all the right notes. I just said that he really seems to like music and picks tunes up right away. In the back of my mind I was thinking, "sweet Jesus, my boy is a musical genius". I was such a proud mommy at that moment. Eddy missed the entire exchange but I relayed it to him again and again.

It really isn't as if we force music on him. I don't play classical music 24 hours a day but he seriously has this frighteningly good memory. His Kindermusik teacher was also very impressed with my story. We hadn't listened to Dvorak in class at all but I think he picked it up listening to it at home one time. I can almost guarantee that that mother from Babies-R-Us took her little girl home and started playing classical music for her.

You can find the excert here. The portion he has mastered starts around the 45 second mark.

Woohoo! Quinn is a prodigy! Definately an occasion for a proud mommy moment. I don't think I could sing that clip accurately. Maybe he has perfect pitch? That would be cool. Get that boy a piano.

Well, that is extremely exciting!!! I agree that you should get a piano. When Eric was little (I'd say around 4, so older than Quinn, but still) he could hear plunk out melodies on the piano after hearing them once. It was eerie and I don't know many people - children or not - who can do it.

Definitely thrilling! :)

He picked it up after listening to it at home one time? That's very impressive and cool! I know which piece you're referring to; it's one of my favorites, too — but I didn't learn it until I was in high school!

Didn't you once mention his dad has a keyboard or something? Perhaps they can jam together ... :)

wow - holy cow- is that COOL or what? I'm so impressed and I think you do have a child prodigy on your hands! I listened to that piece - the part he picked up on was gorgeous and I would LOVE to hear a recording of his sweet little voice humming it! :-)
What an amazing little man you have!

Oh wow, how amazing! Not surprising he's a prodigy though, considering who his parents are :)
